Really fantastic update. Deals with the thoughts of everyone, something which is important to a story.
The new character, John, seems interesting enough. I just hope you don't catch a bout of what I like to call Dragon Ball Z Syndrome (when you make a lot of characters, and only keep seven or eight in the main story line, and discard the rest). But, I don't think its likely.
The farmer's secret was really astounding. So sick and twisted, but believable in a simple farmer. Sounds almost like something from Full Metal Alchemist.
Hmm, John thinks flesh decay is only for zombies. I guess he has never heard of leprosy...

It's actually been done a few times... sort of. The wife thing was my own addition, but see Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Resident Evil: Apocalypse to see a similar situation. Still, loosing loved ones does strange things to a person's mind. Never seen Full Metal Alchemist, so I can't comment on that.
Well, I doubt one would think leprosy in this modern age, especially with zombies running about, and its large chunks of flesh falling out to reveal bones. John will return...
